My favorite chinese Tao philosopher Lao Tse wrote on the concept of
void in the final lines of eleventh chapter of the Tao Te Ching:
Thirty spokes meet in the hub,
but the empty space between them
is the essence of the wheel.
Pots are formed from clay,
but the empty space between it
is the essence of the pot.
Walls with windows and doors form the house,
is the essence of the house
The importance of void influenced my whole life.
As an artist, I paid equal attention to negative space
as to positive space in the composition of my art work.
And for my daily life, I try to pay more attention
to
the unspoken thoughts.
The group of paintings” Window Series” demonstrate my idea of space.The
void is just as meaningful as the structure.
